I am so grateful that there was an entire week plus a bit a few days after Thanksgiving before the start of December. I took those days to organize my house a bit, stock up on the baking supplies, and put in some Christmas planning and scheming. I feel ready, kinda.
The new tradition I am excited about this year is our box of wrapped Christmas books. Each night the kids take turns choosing a book to unwrap and read. It is a wonderful way to have at least a small Christmas activity each December day among the other chaos that happens around here. This idea came from a favorite blog: MADE, and my munkins love it. Having them wrapped makes it so much more special and exciting.
Our December started nicely with Adam off to help the Mormon Helping Hands relief while the rest of us did our Saturday chores and went to a baptism of a good friend. We ended the night with friends over to watch "Elf" and to eat yummy treats.
Sunday was my day to work with Mormon Helping Hands. Adam thought I needed to see how much good can happen because I volunteer to stay home with the children and he can go out and serve others. And it was really what I needed. Often times I feel like I don't get to contribute very much to the world around me when I am ALWAYS at home. He comes home radiating this neighborly love all the while I am ready to pull my hair out and really start sobbing when the next someone spills their soggy cheerios. It is just not the same reward as going into someone's house with a crew of people, working for a day, leaving it stripped of the mess that had happened because of the hurrican, and seeing the look of gratefulness from the homeowner for doing such a huge task for them.
We worked on one basement. The owners had cleared out the furniture and most of the belongings which was a big job, but all the walls, flooring, and ceiling needed to come out too. So I got to pull down some walls and installation and haul buckets after buckets of moldly dryup up the steps and out to the curb. And it was tremendous!
I came home with that same fulfillment I had been so jelous of before and am ready to go again, even though I know Adam would have been more a more productive worker than I and even if I am better and remembering the diaper bag than he is, share the service.
And heck, I got to have two big bags of chips to myself for lunch!
I always have to share if I'm at home.

I cannot even begin to imagine the awesomeness that Dana from MADE has floating around in her head. Her blog is my all-time favorite.
Also: is that a chalkboard wall in your house? I insist on seeing more of it!
