Johnson drops out of heptathlon due to injury

Jacquelyn Johnson, pictured far right, dropped out of the Olympic heptathlon Saturday night with two events remaining due to a left hamstring strain. The four-time NCAA heptathlon champion for Arizona State felt the injury while competing long jump, her first event Saturday.

Johnson was in 21st place after five events. She was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles Friday and 14th in the long jump then dropped to 36th in shot put, 23rd in the 200 and 30th in long jump.

She had hoped to finish in the top 10 at her first Olympics after finishing second at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Coming off her final season at ASU might have caught up with the 23-year-old, competing in her fourth heptathlon in three months: Pac-10 Championship on May 9-10, NCAA Championships on June 13-14, trials on June 27-28 and Olympics, her first major senior international meet.

*I know her! We were competitors in a few track meets in high school. I would be at the high jump working my tail off trying to jump over 5 feet and she would stroll in after whatever race she had just won and sail cleanly over the bar, without any warmup at all. It was not fair! But best of luck to you Jackie as you train for the London Olympics.

Wow! What a cool memory!! It's too bad she about her injury. I cannot begin to imagine what/how she is feeling after working so hard to get to Beijing!!!
