Kayla's hometown is very rural and during certain parts of the year is open to wide spread power outages caused by severe lightning, wind, or dust storms. The power has gone out on two occasions when Kayla and I visited there. The first time was a week before the wedding and the second was our wedding reception. The power is ussually gone for hours or days. On the 14th of August at our reception after we were married Kayla and I were helping setup tables on the basketball court when we saw some very dark clouds off in the distance together with the familiar rolling dust clouds that accompany them. The dust storm hit and the power was immediatley nocked out. We consequently had a very unlighted, dark, hot reception. Imagine 100+ degree whether in Arizona without air conditioning and large groups of people in a confined space. As you might imagine we ended up leaving early about 8:00. Every since then Kayla's family has told us that there is a curse associated with us visiting Hyder. It happened again this last Thursday night. At about 6:00 p.m. there were those clouds and the rolling dust clouds again. The storm hit and sure enough off went the power. It was off from 6:00 p.m. until 5:30 am the next morning. With no air conditioning the house tempeture became the same as the outdoor temperature. At the start we had a great time since we decided to grill some steaks and eat outside. It was a great family time where we were all spending the time together eating, playing games afterward and watching a movie on the portable dvd player. We couldn't get the kids to go to sleep though, because they were too dirty (no water), too hot, and sweaty; so we put Ellie and Emma in the car and took 20 minute drives twice during the night to get them back to sleep. I was pulled over by a highway patrolmen at 3:00 a.m. who wanted to know why I was driving 10 mph under the speed limit in my pagamas. After we returned from the drive I was able to get Ellie to fall asleep on the trampoline with me and Kayla got Emma to sleep in the house. The next day when we woke up the power was on and we were all very happy to have the simple comforts in life again.

Wow--that is a sad curse. Such a hot curse as well. My theory on Adam being pulled over and asked what he was doing with a 3 year old in the back and wearing Pj's--come one--even with electricity that guy could take a guess. He must not have kids. :)
